Speed up Metabolism

Metabolism is essentially the speed at which our body's motor is running. The speed at which our body burns calories is called the metabolic rate. It's how fast your "motor" is running when you're still in a reclined position or sleeping. About 60-75% of energy is expended by the body at rest in such activities.

The metabolism is based on the number of calories we burn throughout the day. Our body constantly burns calories to keep us going whether we are eating, sleeping, cleaning etc. People with a lower percentage of body fat (i.e. muscular) have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular because muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. Some people have a slower metabolic rate and have a harder time staying slim. Younger persons have higher (faster) metabolism because of the increased activity of cells. A slow metabolism actually causes to store fat. The slower the metabolic rate, the greater the weight gains. How to build muscles to improve metabolism? What type of exercise is ideal that speed up metabolism so that you burn calories even at rest or sleep? There are simple exercises that speed up the metabolism.

Causes for Low Metabolism

  • Fasting
  • A low calorie diet
  • Snacking throughout the day on high sugared foods (candy, colas, cakes, gum).
  • Eating or drinking too much sugar containing foods.
  • Lack of physical activity.
  • Underactive thyroid.

Metabolism Boosters

There are some natural metabolism boosters (natural foods) that improves your metabolism. Do not take over the counter pills containing animal thyroid extract that claim to boost up metabolism. Weight Loss Myths - Are You A Believer?

There is no field of science that is so full of myths as that of weight loss. Everyone tries to look for the easy way out and lose weight in a quick and safe manner. The reality of the situation is that weight loss requires a lot of will power, dedication and long time commitment. However, there are certain myths regarding weight loss that need to be exposed.

1) The most commonly heard myth is that eating ice cream actually causes weight loss. This so called theory is based on the assumption that since ice cream is cold, the body uses energy (measured in calories) to warm it up so we are actually consuming energy while eating it.

Though it is true that any action in the body requires energy, but by consuming ice cream that is so rich in fat and sugar the body actually takes in far more calories than what is used up to warm and digest it. Therefore, one must eat sweets in moderation.

The myth might even extend to drinking ice water. In this case at least its not harmful because ice water doesn't contain any calories.However, the energy that is used to warm it to our body temperature is actually negligible in terms of weight loss effect. One advantage is that by drinking water the body feels full and so we feel less hungry. It's also much lower in calories as compared to sugar laden sodas and orange juice.

Another myth you might have heard is that adding a pound of muscle makes the body burn an extra 50 calories.Not only is this untrue it is also meaningless. A pound of new muscle will at most burn only a dozen calories while just sitting consumes up to 70 calories per hour. The body consumes energy to maintain internal temperature, circulate and pump blood, repair worn out cells etc.

The concept of adding muscle is a good idea especially because in order to do so we participate in some form of vigorous exercise such as running or weight training. Mild exercise like walking helps to tone the body rather than build muscle. On an average one burns up to 350 calories in an hour long workout.

With vigorous exercise the body burns about 250 calories more than if one hasn't exercised in a day. Even if we alternate our days between working out and walking it will help keep our muscles well toned and prevent the build up of lactic acid that leads to sore muscles.

The truth is that if we consume more calories than we are able to burn, the remaining energy is stored in the form of chemical bonds in fatty tissues. When the body requires extra energy it will turn to those fat deposits in order to get the needed energy and this is what leads to weight loss and fat reduction.

Thus, a well balanced diet and age appropriate exercise are the only real means to reducing weight and keeping fit.

Even tho, scientists and doctors recommend that a person shouldn't lose more than one kilogram per week, half of a kilogram a week is a great achievement!

You should note that you should not eat less, but you should eat healthy food.

Weight loss tip number two: Do aerobic exercises. When you will do aerobic exercises, you will achieve your results quicker. Aerobic training is the simplest way to get rid of unwanted calories. If you want to lose weight for ever, you should combine weight loss tip number one and two and do them all the time!

Weight loss tips number three: Be patient. You won't have a six pack in two days time. Everything requires time. Trees don't reach their full height in a day. Yes, I am not saying that there aren't ways how you could speed up your weight loss, but anyway like I sad before, everything requires some time.

Weight loss tip number four: Don't forget about anaerobic exercises. If you add some weight training exercises into your weight loss program. Bodybuilding and weight loss are part of the same thing - improving your body and they are related to each other very strongly. Naturally if you do some bodybuilding, you will lose weight and this process will make your program more effective!

Weight loss tip number five: Exercise in the morning. There is one fact you should know. After training your metabolism increases and it stays the same for the next twelve hours after exercise! If you will to exercises in the morning, you will burn more calories during the day. The main mistake all people do is that they exercise the evening then their metabolism is increased without no reason. During the next twelve hours people will sleep.

You should remember that you are responsible for everything. To achieve the most you have to do everything regularly and by doing so, soon you will see how your body shape is improving!
